Landspeed Record Car

Thought I’d update those interested with progress on the car:
Motors: the turnigy motors are not reworkable to open windings so we are rewinding 3 completely to make a spindle. This is not practical for the real car (needs 20 spindles)
gearbox: Gearbox cases being profiled now by Macc Tech waterjet cutters. They will be sent off for machining when I get them.
Suspension:
Temporary brackets machined at school last week. Got a batch of rockers, rocker bearing supports and other brackets laser cut at Congleton Laser. Superb job, no finishing required on most parts.
Design: Chassis and suspension largely finished. Body design ongoing – I’ve just got the OpenFoam CFD software going on my home PC & the body design is an iterative process. I hope the nosecone can be made by the car club….

    Bob,

How big is this car going to be comapred to normal Greenpower ones? It sounds as if it will also be quite heavy due to the amount of motors required. Will you reach an optimal weight to power ratio assuming that batteries only have to last a few minutes for each timed run?

about 5metres long & about a ton weight. The lithium batteries have a 20C discharge capability so battery weight is not too bad. I have about 200kW of motors, should be good for 250mph with enough distance – so that’s 160mph in the UK then ;^)
