Virtual Car Team Week 11: Another CAUC meeting on Zoom, another jam packed evening full of Solid Edge, Elastic band cars, Livery Designs and Quiz Night.

You may remember from last week that we were hoping to look over the OpenFoam results of the two cockpit sizes. Unfortunately however the simulation was still running at the time of the call and therefore had to be postponed until next week.

Instead, we decided to have a look at the steering mechanism for the new car.

Comparing with Dylan & Basil's steering, we centred our discussions around the location of the handlebars, construction and linkage methods to stop any unwanted movement.

Sticking with Solid Edge...but moving away slightly from car designs, we had a mini presentation from Jodie. Having only recently joined the team after starting the sixth form in September and feeling inspired from joining in with our weekly Solid Edge Car Designing sessions, Jodie decided to give it a go herself. Since downloading the software onto her laptop, she's spent the past week working her way through the tutorials supplied by Greenpower to build the lego block shown below.

Satisfied with the block, Jodie proceeded to have a play with how different components can be fixed together - starting with a wheel and bolt!

Having achieved this in one week, we are certainly looking forward to seeing what other components Jodie can produce in the next couple of weeks!!

Following Jodie's 'show & tell', we were treated to another presentation - this time from the Reeder sisters who've had a go at the Elastic Band Car Challenge!

It goes without saying that this pair took the challenge extremely seriously; providing the team with the low down on how it was made, factors they considered and precautions taken to ensure friction slowing the car down was kept to a minimum. Their next task is to try and determine the optimum number of revolutions needed to gain maximum kinetic energy.

We even got to see a quick demonstration across the bedroom floor. Just like Rachel’s attempt from last week, the Reeder car (not sponsored by Steradent!!!:D) was pretty speedy!

Although official measurements are still to come in - the initial test runs are achieving approximate measurements of 22m! Very impressive!!!!

Afterwards, Cate gave an update on her progress stating "I’ve got some more designs and can share my screen if you want to see?!”.....which of course we did!!!! :P

For this week, Cate showed us potential logo positions on the car. As usual, these designs did not disappoint.

For the remainder of the evening, we participated in CAUC Lockdown Quiz Night - Week 6. Hosted once again by Becksy!

Much to the relief of the team, there was not one baby photo insight. Instead rounds consisted of STEM General Knowledge, Guess the city from the skyline, Advertising Slogans, Guess the team member under the helmet and finally Guess the Greenpower track.

 Which track 350

Any guesses which track this is?

It was during Round 3 when Mr G could be heard shouting ”Quick. Take a screenshot, I'm finally at the top of the leader board’.

Mr G on top of the leaderboard 350

To our amusement (less so for Mr G!), this was only the case for a matter of minutes!!! It didn't take long before Jane & Richard swiftly regained their spot in 1st place!!!

However, despite the battling in round 3 between Mr G, Jane & Richard, it was Cate who finished in pole position with a brilliant score of 18,167!

With only 1 point separating top spot on the leader boards' - it's definitely all to play for in the next round of CAUC lockdown quiz night !!! :D

See you next week for another jam packed evening!
